Hey everyone,

Thanks KC and Stephen for the walk cycle handout it was pretty helpful. Just had two questions on the article. Mr. Gordon used the term "flapping the knee" a few times threw out the article. I've never heard this term used before and was wondering what it was exactly. Also towards at the end when he talks about leg polish he says he uses "rotation on top of Inverse Kinematics in order to hyper-extend the knee a touch, again for good shape change." I was wondering if someone could clarify these terms and techniques for me. Or maybe we can go over them and demo them in class next week?...

  1. Good questions Joey. Knee flap is a control that you sometimes get with an IK rig that allows you to pivot the knee around while you are in IK. It allows you to make adjustments to the knee position without having to alter the ik position of the feet (sometimes it helps get around weird popping as a last resort). You'll occasionally see a similar control for the elbows when you're in arm ik. As for rotation on top of IK to hyperextend the knee, again, this is a control you can sometimes get on a rig (I don't think you have this on norman), that allows you to add leg/knee rotations on top of your IK. He's talking about really subtle polish techniques at the very very very VERY end of your process that can give a little extra variation and interest in your animation. I wouldn't really worry too much about that stuff yet, but we can revisit it in a couple of class when you guys are in the finishing stages of your animation. Definitely remind us in class!
